Weekend in Malta - Part 1

Oh dear, I think I've overdone it.  I'm five weeks post surgery and feeling good.  But, I was ambitious this week and we did some running around.  Today I'm back in bed, tired and sore.  Because it was laparoscopic and I don't have a big incision, it's easy to forget that it was still major abdominal surgery.  Even with the very slight setback, I'm so happy with my recovery.  One more week of rest and back to work.

January and February are typically travel periods for us.  Every effort is made to escape the winter blues.  Because we knew that there wouldn't be any trips for a few months, we managed to squeeze in two weekend trips in January this year.  The first was Malta.

Because of the horrid injections that I was receiving, this was a very relaxed weekend.  We even spent some time in the hotel's indoor pool and had a couples massage at the spa.  Something we never do.  But, the weather and scenery were so nice that we spent most of our time strolling around in the sunshine, stopping often for a rest.

Malta is gorgeous and we spent hours discussing if/how we could live there.  We stayed in Sliema which is a mix of old Malta and new apartment blocks.   There is a long and beautiful walk along the seawall that we did a few times.

I really should do bit of research and give you some valuable travel information about this island.  But, I'm just so lazy tired.  The photo above really tells you all you need to know about our trip.  It was warm enough we didn't need coats.  We did need sunglasses because... sunshine.  We relaxed.

We spent our time either with faces tilted to the sun, eyes closed soaking in the vitamin D or gazing out across the Mediterranean Sea.  And I must have taken a gazillion photos of empty little boats bobbing in the water.

We took a taxi to the walled city of Mdina.  Again I should tell you all about the interesting history. But all I can tell you is that it was heavenly strolling hand in hand along the narrow, cobbled pathways.

We found a place along the wall for a lunch of pizza, beer and panoramic views.  We really lucked out with the weather.

I can tell you that there are 365 catholic churches on Malta, an island with the population of just over 400,000.  We stuck our head into a few and of course, they are brilliant.

Malta is definitely one of those places that we will revisit.  It's so picturesque, I couldn't take enough photos.  And I love the feel of it, the people were so friendly and relaxed.

Every meal we had was great.  We had a special anniversary/birthday meal at Ta Kris Restaurant and we walked away hours later feeling like family.

As usual lately, I can't quite put into words how I feel about Malta other than that I loved it.  I hope that you can get some feel for it through my photos.  Tomorrow I'll post some more from our second day and a harbor boat tour that we did.  You should definitely add it to your list of wonderful weekends away.  It's only a three hour flight from London.

Have you been to Malta and if so, what did you think?
