As you already know, Matt and I both suffer from severe wanderlust. We're itching to take another big trip but it looks like it might be next year before that happens. In the mean time, we just can't resist getting away on the weekends. Even a few days someplace new is exciting and so worth the effort.
I'm not sure how Aachen happened. I'd never heard of it before, to be honest. But, when we sat down to look at Eurostar destinations, we settled on Germany and Aachen is the first place you come to when you head in that direction. So Aachen was our destination. We left after work on a Friday and were there within a few hours and settled into the center of the city.
We had a lovely weekend people watching from sidewalk cafes, visiting the Aachen Cathedral and the town hall (Rathaus). Like Aix en Provence, Aachen is known for their fountains. My favorite was the Fountain of Puppets with all of its movable parts. Aachen is also famous for being the royal seat of Charlemagne, so a museum visit was on the agenda. One location that was not on the agenda was the red light district. However, we were casually strolling around the city center walking off dinner one night and after a right turn, then a left, then a right, that is exactly where we found ourselves. It's just a few blocks from the Town Hall and apparently dates back to the middle ages. We quickly retreated to some nearby streets without red lights and floor to ceiling windows.
Here are some of my favorite photos from the weekend. Don't worry, none of them are from our short and accidental foray into the red light district.

Guess where we're off to next weekend. I'll give you a hint... gondolas! So excited!!
Have you ever been to Aachen?
I love random weekend trips! Its so easy to do from London! I still haven't been to Germany yet....hoping I'll get there soon!
ReplyDeleteWeekend trips can be super fun though! Sometimes its the small trips I get the most out of.
ReplyDeleteSelena, When my girls were in Girl Scouts we went to Aachen and did a guided walk of all the fountains. It was very interesting. It is a pretty city, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI love looking at just where we can go for weekend trips... they are the best! I do that with Alaska air sometimes, just looking at the random places we could get a cheap plane fair Friday-Sunday... though in Europe that's so much easier and more lovely! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks again for sharing! I love to hear about where you go!

The first picture I love is of the grey cat. I am telling myself he is not grumpy he is just German. The second is the shot of all that wonderful bread. Oh, that is one of the things that helped me fall in love with Germany when I lived there and I am always on the hunt for "good" bread here in the States.
ReplyDeleteGermany is full of surprises! I lived there for a few years but never got to Aachen - but planning another trip for next year so you never know! Gorgeous photos.
ReplyDeleteHow sweet! ("Short and accidental" trip, huh? Lol I believe ya...)
ReplyDeletePretty nice for a short hop....seeing any new place is a wonder!
ReplyDeleteI've never even heard of Aachen! but now it's on my list!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photographs as always. I love that you picked it based on Eurostar destinations - it's one of my favourite modes of travel so I'm definitely going to look at Aachen as another option for a getaway soon!
ReplyDeleteOh, it looks lovely! I'm not a fan of the Eurostar but we're definitely planning to fly off for more quick weekends next year.

ReplyDeleteI used to take the train to Aachen all the time, but I never went that far. Was only in Cologne > Dusseldorf > Bochum. Not even Essen I ended up visiting. It's such a beautiful city indeed!
