On the way back to the ship from our day tour, we made a quick stop
to ride a few stops on the pristine St. Petersburg Metro.
The St. Petersburg underground opened in 1955 and is full of
elegant architecture and artwork... glass columns, intricate mosaics and chandeliers.
They are also some of the deepest lines and stations in the world.
The cars are much larger than what I'm used to here in London.
No advertising and everything was so clean.
We even rode on an original wooden escalator. You can only find one of these in London now.

Have you been on a Russian subway? I hear the system in Moscow is even more amazing.
I road the metro in St Petersburg a few times, but I'm more familiar with Moscow as we lived there for 14 months. I giggle a little bit because although some of the stops are ornate, I've also seen drunks puking on the cars or getting stuck for 20 minutes in a hot smelly car, so I don't always remember the pretty sides of the metro! Plus it's only the ones downtown that are ornate. As you get further out there fairly bland and become more Soviet looking. However, the depth of the metro and the workings of it all is quite fascinating. And you're right, the cars are huge! I thought London's were so small in comparison visiting London from Moscow my first time. It's been fun to see your photos and relive the time we lived there!
ReplyDeleteMoscow metro is incredible! But they are much more polite in St. Pete. You've honestly made my week with these posts. I'm on the verge of packing my bags and going right back to Russia (just don't tell my husband I said that - he's been begging to return since we left!)
ReplyDeleteLove it love it love it! I wanna go there too with my fiancee :)
